On board the Saeftinghe, everything revolves around trust. Anyone who comes on board heading for the Far North or the open ocean must know that every technical detail is correct. Wind is and remains our primary source of power. But when we need engine power, in countercurrents, when approaching ports or during longer journeys under engine power, that power must be reliable, efficient and well thought out.

That is why we invested in a completely new engine installation. Not a simple replacement, but a thorough upgrade of the entire propulsion system: new engine, modified propeller shaft, a four-bladed propeller and a redesigned fuel and cooling system.

At normal cruising speed, we run at approximately 1800 rotations per minute. This results in a boat speed of 7.5 to 8 knots with a consumption of approximately 14 litres per hour. Efficient and stable, ideal for longer journeys. When extra power is needed, we can go up to 2300 rpm. This gives us a speed of approximately 9.5 knots with a fuel consumption of 26 litres per hour. The new engine allows us to run at full power for long periods of time. This reserve gives us flexibility and safety when circumstances require it.

The new four-bladed propeller provides better propulsion in the water and more control during manoeuvres. In combination with the modified propeller shaft, this results in smoother power transfer and more stable sailing behaviour, especially at lower speeds or in tight harbours.

There has also been a fundamental change in the engine room. The engine is equipped with a closed, maintenance-free cooling system and a dry exhaust. This means no seawater circulating through the engine, no weed pot, no impeller that can fail unexpectedly. Fewer vulnerable parts, fewer maintenance-sensitive components and therefore greater reliability on longer expeditions.

In addition, an extra diesel tank was integrated into the keel, under the engine. The total fuel capacity is now 3,200 litres. This gives us a significantly greater range and more autonomy, especially in remote areas where bunkering facilities are limited. An integrated pump and filtration system keeps the diesel in continuous circulation and filters out water and impurities. In cold regions, fuel quality is crucial, and this system ensures that the engine is always supplied with clean fuel.

To our visitors, this may seem like a technical story. In reality, it is about something much more fundamental, namely certainty. Certainty that we can rely on our ship, regardless of the circumstances. Certainty that we can adjust our route when the weather demands it. Certainty that adventure is never dependent on chance.

Saeftinghe remains a sailing ship that uses the wind as its primary source of propulsion. With this new installation, we have a powerful, efficient and robust engine that takes us further when necessary.
