Lerwick, the historic port town located on the coast of the Shetland Islands, is preparing for the arrival of the Tall Ships Races in July 2023. The picturesque town centre, located on the waterfront near Victoria Pier, will be the scene of the spectacular regatta.
The area has a rich history dating back to the 17th century, when the town was used as a trading post by Dutch fishermen. Today, Lerwick is a thriving commercial, social and cultural centre with many small independent businesses offering goods and services.
From accommodation to food and drink, Lerwick offers everything you need. The town has an array of welcoming cafes, bars, restaurants and takeaways that feature local produce on the menu.
During the Tall Ships Races Lerwick 2023, the Cultural Quarter on the waterfront at Hay's Dock will be buzzing with events and activities. Here you will find the Shetland Museum and Archives and the Mareel arts centre and cinema open to the public.
Other attractions in Lerwick town centre include Fort Charlotte, Shetland's most important civic building - the Lerwick Town Hall, and the iconic Lodberrie which became famous as Jimmy Perez's house in the series 'Shetland'. And don't forget to enjoy the beautiful white sand of Bains Beach next to the Queen's Hotel.
