Due to the incident with Arruno, we unfortunately had to cancel the trip to sail Arruno back home. However, a good friend, the owner of Puffin Rock, was looking for someone to bring his yacht over to the Netherlands from A Coruna. A win-win was quickly found, with the crew we were going to sail Arruno back home with, we will now bring Puffin Rock to Scheveningen in 3 legs.

An inspiring journey along the Spanish north coast

The Bay of Biscay, also known as the Gulf of Gascony, is a part of the Atlantic Ocean that is notorious among seafarers. It is a challenge for many sailors, not because of the distance, but because of its location. The prevailing westerly winds and the accompanying "swell" (ocean swell) run into the Gulf without any obstacles. The ocean swell bumps into the Gulf on the continental plate, creating a difficult sea in harsh conditions. The cause is to be found in the structure of the seabed where it goes from a depth of a few thousand metres to a depth of 100 metres, the continental shelf.

The great advantage of this bottom structure is that it is a paradise for whales and dolphins because of the large amount of food they can find here. Regularly these giants and acrobats of the sea show themselves during a crossing.

In A Coruna, we will prepare Puffin Rock for our trip. If the weather conditions are right and the Corona measures allow, we will stay along the northern Spanish coast for a while before making the crossing to France. This trip consists of two icebergs because of one leg that we plan with one or two nights at sea.
The last day will be spent cleaning Puffin Rock and getting it ready for the next leg towards the north coast of Brittany, L'Aber Wrac'h.
Some practical details:
  • This leg will be sailed with Puffin Rock
  • There are flights to A Coruna (Compostella).
  • From Les Sables-d'Olonne you can easily travel back to Belgium with the TGV.
  • For this trip, we will do everything we can to respect the dates.
