At the end of summer 2021 we sail Arruno from the Azores back to Belgium. A trip, if we do this non-stop of 1.500 nm. To create a nice experience between ocean sailing and enjoying the surroundings on the way, we will divide this route in 3 parts:

The Gulf, an experience on its own...

The Bay of Biscay, also known as the Gulf of Gascony, is a part of the Atlantic Ocean that is notorious among seafarers. It is a challenge for many sailors, not because of the distance, but because of its location. The prevailing westerly winds and the accompanying "swell" (ocean swell) run into the Gulf without any obstacles. The ocean swell bumps into the Gulf on the continental plate, creating a difficult sea in harsh conditions. The cause is to be found in the structure of the seabed where it goes from a depth of a few thousand metres to a depth of 100 metres, the continental shelf.

The great advantage of this bottom structure is that it is a paradise for whales and dolphins because of the large amount of food they can find here. Regularly these giants and acrobats of the sea show themselves during a crossing.

When we arrive in La Coruna we have to wait for a good weather forecast. The possibilities for fallback are not unlimited and setting course towards a (safe) harbour during the crossing is not without danger as soon as the weather really worsened.

As soon as we have a "weatherwindow" we set course to the other side of the Gulf. The trip of a 350 nm. is completed in 2 to 3 days. If time permits, we can visit some nice Breton harbours before we berth in Brest.

The last day we plan to clean Arruno and prepare it for the next stretch towards the Belgian coast.

Some practical things:
  • This route will be sailed with Arruno
  • There are flights to La Coruna.
  • On the other hand there are flights available from Brest, but here you can also choose to return by TGV. There is a direct connection to Paris.
  • For this trip we will do everything we can to respect the dates.
