Sailtraining
After the sail out of the Tall Ships Races in Lerwick, we are waiting for good winds to make the crossing to the Faroe Islands.
Anyone from 15 years old, with or without sailing experience, can participate.
Are you a beginning sailor, do you already have experience or is it your first time at sea? Maybe it is even your first contact with sailing?
Together with other youths, you will make a journey across the sea on T/S Saeftinghe. The experience you will gain will be with you for the rest of your life. You will learn how to sail and navigate along the way. An experienced crew is present who are happy to share their knowledge and experience.
Experience is not necessary. However, we do expect you to be willing to work together, to hoist the sails, to cook together, to keep watch, all under the supervision of an experienced crew.
Our sail training programmes focus on bringing youngsters (15 to 25 years old) together and giving them the opportunity to have a life experience. By doing so, we work on international friendships and encourage mutual understanding and respect.
For the sail training programmes that we organise ourselves with tall ship Saeftinghe, we are not limited to the rule that 50% of the number of people on board must be youngsters between 15 and 25 years old, as is the case with the Tall Ships Races, so all ages are welcome from 15 years old onwards.
The first "real" step you have to do as a trainee to participate in this adventure is to register. Once you have registered you can confirm your participation. You can register or log in here.
A good preparation is important. As captain and crew we like to get acquainted before you get on board.
We therefore invite you to visit the ship and get to know the captain and crew before your departure. This way you can walk around the ship, explore and we can already give you a basis of information, we will answer your questions as fully as possible. We take you along for the ride so you are already ready for life on a sailing ship.
We will do this introduction during Ostend at Anchor (from the 1st till the 4th of June 2023) in which T/S Saeftinghe also participates.
A sailing ship at sea sails day and night. In order to maintain this permanence, we work in three shifts led by an experienced watchofficer. These 'teams' keep watch and they follow one another:
During these watches you will be in charge of the navigation, steering the ship and keeping a lookout.
Apart from guard duties we also cook, maintain the ship and take time to rest, read and talk to each other. A day at sea will not be boring quickly!
Tórshavn, usually locally referred to as simply Havn, is the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands. It is in the southern part on the east coast of Streymoy. To the northwest of the city lies the 347-meter-high (1,138 ft) mountain Húsareyn, and to the southwest, the 350-meter-high (1,150 ft) Kirkjubøreyn. They are separated by the Sandá River. The city itself has a population of 13,957 (2022), and the greater urban area has a population of 21,078. The Norse (Scandinavians) established their parliament on the Tinganes peninsula in AD 850. Tórshavn thus became the capital of the Faroe Islands and has remained so ever since. Early on, Tórshavn became the centre of the islands' trade monopoly, thereby being the only legal place for the islanders to sell and buy goods. In 1856, the trade monopoly was abolished and the islands were left open to free trade.
We are transparent in our price structure. For our sailtraining we offer a full board formula.
Because we want to give all youngsters the opportunity to participate in this adventure, youngsters between 15 and 25 years old can participate at the child rate.
Cost for this leg is 990€ for a youngster (15 - 25 years), 1,350€ for an adult. Participants of the Tall Ships Races 2023 enjoy a 70% discount on this itinerary.
